What's the deal with Windows XP? by Ben Poese, Goetze Dental Help Desk Manager, posted April 7, 2014

April 7, 2014 - Kansas City, Missouri – Microsoft is ending support and updates for Windows XP on April 8.

What does that mean?

After April, 8 Microsoft will not release security updates or provide technical assistance for the Windows XP operating system. The Windows XP operating system will still work. Without security updates, computers with the Windows XP operating system may be vulnerable to security risks which could lead to compliance issues with HIPAA.

Upgrade or Replace?

The costs associated with acquiring licensing, installing the operating system, reinstalling all software and dental devices and upgrading internal components to best suit the operating system are often as much as a new computer. New computers have benefit of the warranty, better performance and the ability to add additional upgrades in the future.

While Microsoft recommends upgrading existing computers to the Windows 8.1 operating system, we've found this recommendation not well suited for the dental environment. Many common dental software and dental devices (cameras, sensors, ect.) may not be compatible with Windows 8.1. Also, the learning curve on the user interface from Windows XP to Windows 8.1 can be a challenge.

While all practices are unique, we generally recommend Windows XP users replace their computers with new computers equipped with Windows 7 Professional 64 bit. The new computers purchased from a reputable source with knowledge of the software and hardware necessary in the dental environment are guaranteed to be compatible with the new operating system.
